In 2020, all records for downloads were broken, not only for mobile games and non-game apps but also consumer spending on Apple’s App Store and Google Play increased.
Due to the covid-19 pandemic, many users searched for and downloaded apps for education, employment and entertainment. This new situation boosted global app downloads, as the number of users looking for new apps to facilitate their tasks at work, at home or to get fit increased exceptionally.
Globally, spending amounts to almost $111 billion on in-app purchases, subscriptions and premium apps. This data shows a growth of 30.2% compared to 2019.
In this post, we will focus on global downloads and revenue earned in 2020 on Apple’s App Store and Google Play.
Global mobile app revenue worldwide in 2020
Consumer spending on the App Store reached $72.3bn, up 30.3% year-on-year from $55.5bn in 2019. As in previous years, this outpaced the amount users spent on Google Play, which grew 30% year-on-year from $29.7bn in 2019 to $38.6bn.
The App Store generated 87.3% more in consumer spending than the Play Store, with both platforms experiencing roughly the same year-on-year growth. The spending gap between the platforms remained relatively flat compared to 2019.
Apart from Games, applications in the Entertainment category have been where users have spent the most.

App installs set a new record in 2020, with the App Store and Google Play together reaching almost 143 billion downloads.
In the App Store, the photo and video category recorded the highest number of non-game app downloads. On Google Play, apps in the Tools category recorded the most installs after games.

Mobile games continue to account for the largest share of spending in both app shops, accounting for 65.8% of iOS revenue and 82.6% of Google Play revenue.

More downloads were made on Google Play than on the App Store, with a year-on-year increase of 39.3%. Approximately 82% of mobile game downloads are on Google’s platform.
The app market has experienced an unprecedented surge due to the pandemic and changing consumer needs and behaviours. We will see if in 2021 they will reach new records again in line with the global situation.
